Statement by Larry Ivory, President of the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce, on Governor Quinn's Veto of Smart Grid Bill

PEORIA, Ill., May 5, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The veto of Senate Bill 9 today is disappointing and a missed opportunity to not only create jobs here in Illinois, but to strengthen our electric system and improve service for residents. Enactment of Senate Bill 9 would ensure that the benefits of the Smart Grid program will be felt in Illinois for years to come. As workers and businesses complete the work needed to modernize the electrical grid, this will help generate increased investment and draw new business to Illinois.

Already, the grid modernization program is doing what it was intended to do when the Illinois General Assembly enacted the original Smart Grid law in 2011.

I urge the General Assembly to override the veto on Senate Bill 9 so that the Smart Grid program can continue to put people back to work and help Illinois stay competitive in the digital age. Senate Bill 9 will help repower our state's economy, an opportunity we simply cannot afford to miss.
